Questions for reflection...
Do you believe humans are separate or fundamentally different from other species? If so, what makes them different and where does your distinction come from?
How do you see and relate to 'nature'? Do you believe in a separation between nature and culture?
Do humans have a divine right to exploit nature/the environment? What are the foundations of this belief? Who would disagree with this and on what basis?
What connects you to other people? Does your relationship to other people imply responsibilities? What is the nature of these responsibilities? Do you have responsibilities to those people you do not know (yet)? Do you have any responsibility in relation to future generations?
Various indigenous ways of knowing rely on an understanding of relationships based on reciprocity and communal responsibility, as opposed to competition and individualisation. This different understanding has several implications in terms of how these communities conceptualise 'work', 'children' and the future. This project aims to help learners to understand how their own notion of these concepts is embedded in their cultures and how becoming aware of our lenses can help us understand those who may disagree with our views of reality.
